Groundhog Day Fun
Hey Friends,
It’s February! Did you know that this month our youngest will have lived his first decade, and our oldest will have lived two? Time flies! But let's not dwell on that just yet – let's talk about tomorrow because it's GROUNDHOG DAY!
In our house, groundhogs are VIPS (Very Important Pals), especially for our Hailey. I kid you not, she gets downright emotional when she spots them. I mean, we're talking tears of joy here! It's the cutest mix of hilarious and adorable, that makes every sighting a little celebration. We even have one living in our yard this year and he’s so cute! Evan and I even started calling them "land otters" because, let's be real, they've got that same level of cuteness going on.
So, in the spirit of Hailey's groundhog-induced happy dances, I wanted to share some awesome fun activities to celebrate!
Below you’ll find a fun experiment, suggestions for STEM adventures, sensory exploration, crafts that will make you go "aww," and some themed reading recommendations. I hope you LOVE them as much as we do!
Fun Experiment:
Here's a quick experiment you can try with stuff you probably already have lying around.
You'll need a balloon, a bottle, vinegar, baking soda, and a marker. First, blow up the balloon (don't tie it) and draw a face on it. Then, deflate it and fill it with a tablespoon of baking soda.
Next, grab an empty bottle, peel off the label, and pour about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar inside. Now, pull that balloon over the top of the bottle so it's tight.
Here's the fun part: shake the baking soda out of the balloon, into the bottle, and watch it bubble up, blowing up the balloon! For extra Groundhog Day fun, do this outside and use chalk to measure his "shadow."
STEM Activities:
Shadow Science Experiment:
Set up an area, indoors or outdoors, where kids can check out shadows throughout the day. Chat about how the groundhog's shadow supposedly predicts the weather. Have the kids measure and record shadow lengths at different times. It's a simple way to introduce them to time, sunlight, and measurement.
Burrow Building Challenge:
Challenge the kids to make their own mini burrows using craft supplies like cardboard, paper, and clay. Talk about why burrows are crucial for groundhogs in winter. This hands-on activity brings out creativity, problem-solving skills, and teaches about animal habitats.
Sensory Bin Ideas:
Groundhog Habitat Sensory Bin:
Create a bin filled with things that mimic a groundhog's pad – think soil, rocks, twigs, and tiny groundhog figures. Let the kids explore and play in it, giving their senses a workout and letting them use their imagination.
Weather Sensory Bottles:
Make bottles representing different weather conditions – sunny, cloudy, rainy, and snowy. Connect it to the Groundhog Day tradition of predicting the weather. Discuss how groundhogs' behavior is linked to the changing seasons.
Craft Ideas:
Paper Plate Groundhog Craft:
Transform paper plates into cute groundhog faces using construction paper, googly eyes, and markers. This simple craft boosts fine motor skills and lets the kids get creative while learning about this furry weather guru.
Groundhog Day Puppets:
Craft groundhog puppets using brown paper bags or craft sticks. Get the kids to put on a puppet show, reenacting the groundhog's emergence from its burrow. It's a cool way to encourage storytelling, dramatic play, and fine motor coordination.
Book Ideas:
"Groundhog Weather School" by Joan Holub:
We read this book today, and it’s so cute! I had no idea there were so many famous groundhogs predicting the weather. After reading it, we looked up a few of them on Wiki, and there were charts telling which had predicted correctly/incorrectly for what years…you could totally use this for a math lesson with graph paper, comparing the groundhogs!
"Substitute Groundhog" by Pat Miller:
In this fun story, the Groundhog gets a substitute to predict the weather, leading to humorous and unexpected results. It's a great read-aloud that sparks conversations about predictions and surprises.
I was so excited that Groundhog Day fell on a FRIDAY! I think it’s the perfect time to mix fun and learning. I hope that you have fun celebrating our VIPs! Happy Groundhog Day!

A Dream about Genesis 1: 6
Hey Friends!
It's been a while since I last shared my thoughts here. Over the holidays, I made a conscious choice to be fully present, enjoying three weeks with our family all in one place. Social media took a back seat, and even homeschooling enjoyed a well-deserved vacation. Now, we're back in action with this week marking the return to our normal routine.
So, for this first post of the new year, I've been eager to share this crazy dream with you, because I truly believe it's not just meant for me.
The Dream
A couple of weeks ago, I awoke from a vivid dream – you know, the kind where you wake up feeling like it was so real, right in the middle of something significant, and you desperately want to go back to sleep and finish it? But, at the same time, you wonder if it was the melatonin gummy you took or maybe it’s a message to decipher. Haha, the struggle is real!
In this dream, a friend challenged me to memorize Genesis 1:6.
Now, normally, I'm all in for diving into a verse, but this one had me scratching my head – "What's the deal with separating water from water, God?" It's been on a loop in my mind ever since. Those who know me well can guess what happened next – I DUG in!
Discovering the Depths: Water's Role in Creation
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
Water's role in creation echoes through Scripture (Job 38; Psalm 136; 2 Peter 3). On day two, God divided the waters, creating an expanse, with the Spirit moving "over the face of the waters." A reminder that the Holy Spirit is ever-present, guiding us through life's waters.
Initially, I thought, "Okay, God set boundaries for water at creation, even in the calm meeting of water with water, there's a need for distinction." I was knee-deep in rearranging my office and our schoolroom, turning chaos into order. Seemed fitting, right? But that didn’t feel like the whole lesson. The true revelation struck during the relocation of my desk, which happened to carry our 20-gallon fish tank.
Fish Tank Drama and a Lesson in Matthew 11:28-30
Ever tried pushing a desk with a fish tank on it? Let's just say, my patient husband deserves a medal for averting the impending desk disaster. Water is HEAVY, and the legs of my desk were on the verge of collapsing, ready to spill water onto everything. In a real-life enactment of that dream verse, I had to separate the water!
Draining the tank, another verse hit me - Matthew 11:28-30, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest..."
I played the scenario again - In the very beginning of creation, God made light in the darkness and then hovered above and separated waters creating the atmosphere. What struck me is what comes after this verse in the Genesis story. God doesn’t just high-five Himself with an "it was good" after the water parting gig. It's when dry land, a place to rest, is fashioned.
So, here I was in the act of taking water out, lightening the load so that it was easier to carry, and setting it on another piece of furniture to rest (dry land, if you will), with a goal and a purpose of bringing new life (a breath of fresh air) into our space. My own personal Sunday school lesson, except it was actually on a Saturday.
He assures us, "I'll lift the heaviest of loads, create land for you to rest on, and show you what your life can truly look like. I want to create something new in you. No matter how deeply entwined it seems within you, I can carry it, and I WILL make something new out of the chaos. So, give it to GOD, let Him carry it; this is what His grace looks like."
I have shared some of those moments here on my blog when life felt like a turbulent sea. God has lifted me from the depths, placing me on a firm foundation. This act brings joy in chaos, a peace that defies logic. Offering to Him the pieces of ourselves that don’t make sense gives us a chance to breathe again, releasing a soul-crushing weight from our chest and heart.
Have you experienced similar moments?
Have you ever experienced those moments when it feels like God is speaking to you with a deliberate and powerful intention, revealing His character in ways that make denying His existence unfathomable? I love the Bible because I can read the same verse and learn something new every time.
Today, I paused as I read Psalm 107:28-30 – “Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. YES, GOD!
MOMENTS OF REFLECTION
A few times this week, I have sat in our new room, eyes closed, envisioning God hovering above me. Thinking about how He shows up in the mess, waiting for us to admit we've got some heavy stuff going on. Ready to separate it, remove its weight, and lighten the load, so we can breathe. I’ve envisioned Him creating dry land from the depths of despair, so we can rest and bask in His light. We need only to, "Be still and know that I am God." That pause is glorious!
Evan, in his usual enthusiasm, has declared his own love for our new schoolroom multiple times this week. He even suggested “Let’s keep learning” after we finished lessons on Monday. Zack thought I was exaggerating, questioned Evan, and walked back into the room shaking his head and laughing. It was TRUE. There's a peace settling in, a breath of fresh air filling our lungs.
Just like our room found order when we let go, and created boundaries, often life finds its rhythm when we let ourselves lighten the load. So, let's remember: give God the broken pieces, and watch Him create an atmosphere where His light shines through. This is the essence of surrendering our brokenness, allowing God to separate it and bring forth something new and beautiful. It's a powerful journey of grace, a dance of transformation, in the arms of our Creator.
A Prayer for hard days :
Dear God,
Today was tough and we felt a bit like we were in deep waters. But we know you're with us, just like you were at the beginning, creating something new and beautiful.
Thank you for helping us. We want to let go of the heavy things and let you carry them, just like you carry the weight of the oceans. As we breathe deeply, help us feel your presence, like a deep exhale as you lift our burdens. Let your light shine through our tough times and make something good out of them.
We trust you to guide us to a place of rest and peace, like dry land after the storm.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Closing Thoughts and Prayer Requests:
I hope today's blog inspired and connected with you. I’d love it if you’d share your insights or reflections on this verse, or any other verse that resonates with you in the comments. Did it bring a new perspective or trigger thoughts on another passage? Let's learn and grow together by exploring the messages God reveals to each of us!
I invite you to make this space truly ours.

Math Link Cubes - Counting and Creating:
Originally purchased for homeschooling, Math Link Cubes have found a dual purpose as building blocks for impromptu creativity. They are so loved that I have purchased this set 8 times! Evan's creations range from car garages for his Hot Wheels to interchangeable superheroes, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to our journeys.
Travel Etch a Sketch & LCD Writing Tablet:
A few years back, Evan's swim buddy gifted him a Travel Etch a Sketch, sparking endless hours of backseat fun. Later, a small magnetic travel drawing and an LCD Writing Tablet joined the collection. Recently, Evan has added a personal touch by bringing characters from our audiobooks to life and engaging in countless games of tic-tac-toe.
Guess in 10 :
This year, Evan is diving into the world of Swimming Creatures for Science. Embracing my inner nerd, I turned our car into an impromptu classroom, seizing every mile as a chance to unravel the mysteries of the deep blue. Lively discussions and friendly competition added a splash of fun to our trips. Evan's gastroenterology department inquired about the game at his appointment yesterday and promptly ordered it on Amazon for their own kids' Christmas—talk about making waves in learning and laughter, proving that education and family fun can go hand in fin.
Rush Hour & Kanoodle -
Rush Hour and Kanoodle were both gifts from Evan’s grandparents that landed into our bag of wonders. These puzzle games transform delays into brain-teasing challenges, keeping the whole family engaged.
Fun Erasable Pens - Scribble, Doodle, Repeat:
Quick tip: I learned the hard way that crayons melt, so consider colored pencils, washable markers, and our personal favorites: erasable markers and pens! From doodling to creating impromptu travel journals, these pens add a touch of magic to every mile.
Themed Coloring Sheets - Creative Road Trip Delight:
Download themed coloring sheets for a fun road trip activity. Whether it's holiday themes or thrilling travel adventures, they can keep your little ones captivated. To make them last beyond a single journey, we recommend laminating them and using a dry erase marker for continued creative fun.
Scavenger Hunt - Turn Your Road Trip into an Adventure:
Transform your road trip into an exciting adventure with a checklist of license plates from different states and captivating things to spot along the way. It adds an interactive layer to the journey, making each mile a discovery.
Musical elements:
When boredom starts to creep in, we often hand over the AUX and let the kids take control of the music. They take turns choosing songs, and I always enjoy hearing what is unique selections.
Turn it into a game of its own: One of my fondest memories on a car trip involved trying to identify a distant Disney song heard across the lake at my in-laws. We turned the 45-minute drive into a game of “Name That Disney Tune” with their favorite tracks, sparking laughter and friendly competition. 🎶
Other Items In the Mix:
Magic Color Pads with Markers, Hot Wheels Racing Cars, Miscellaneous fidget spinners, and other tactile toys find a home in our bag, providing the perfect distractions for moments that call for focus and calm.
Snack Variety
Granola Bar: A quick energy boost for those in-between moments.
Nuts and Meat Stick: Packed with protein, offering a satisfying and nutritious snack.
Gummies: A soft and sweet treat to delight the taste buds.
Crunchy Option: Whether it's a rice cake or popcorn, a crunchy snack adds a good crunchy texture to the mix.
Our Most Used Car Sickness Essentials:
Preventive Measures:
Pack ginger candies or ginger ale; ginger is known for its anti-nausea properties. Consider essential oils or wristbands designed to alleviate motion sickness. (Mints are my personal favorite, though my little dude disagrees.)
Look Forward:
Have your child look out of the front window to reduce feelings of nausea. Try a game of name that tune or include an audiobook. Keep hands busy with fun fidgets. Create challenges with the math cubes: build a character from two different colors or build something from 12 blocks in 3 different colors, etc.
Some of our favorite audiobooks this year: My Side of the Mountain Series by Jean Craighead George, The Green Ember Series by S. D. Smith, The Vanderbeekers Series by Karina Yan Glasser, A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and most recently The Cronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.
Frequent Stops:
Plan breaks for fresh air, minimizing the risk of car sickness. Find a park or a place to walk around. I know this means you’ll get to your destination a bit later, but you’ll be a whole lot happier and cleaner!
Personal Experiences and Solutions:
We keep a roll of paper towels, an old beach towel, an extra full set of clothes, and—yes, you guessed it—extra puke bags (we love the blue ones like they give out at the hospital). Also, include a garbage bag for throwaway items and a gallon zip lock for any dirty clothes if IT happens.
Lastly, Embrace for Impact, Expect the Crazy—it's Bound to Happen
Sometimes, no matter how much you prepare, something unexpected occurs. It’s okay, friend, it’s momentary! Let the kids take turns being the DJ, and remember, holiday travel can be a breeze with a bit of preparation and the right tools in your arsenal.
So, there you have it—our tried-and-true guide to turning your family road trips into joyous adventures. Remember, the key is to embrace the unexpected, enjoy the ride, and let the laughter of your little ones be the soundtrack to your journey. Embracing Chaos: The 'Tah Done' lifestyle
The week before Thanksgiving, my husband stumbled upon our kitchen to find our steam mop abandoned on the floor – like a whimsical domestic crime scene. The ensuing conversation was hilariously typical. I was admittedly a bit more "just forget it" mid-task than usual, cord sprawled across the room and all. These little chaotic moments, where planned perfection surrenders to chaos, like clean laundry cascading into the hallway because Evan wanted me to count his pogo stick jumps, are what make our lives uniquely ours.
I think the majority of us can agree that adulting often feels like navigating a to-do list longer than a CVS receipt. Drowning in it, I embraced the beauty of imperfect progress. Life doesn't demand flawless execution but thrives on genuine effort. Putting off a task and taking our marching orders from God feels more true, noble, right, pure, and lovely than following our own exhaustive to-do list. Just think about it – what brings more joy and peace than aligning our actions with God's purpose? The reality-mid mop swipe, my kid asked to snuggle and read a book, the mopping could wait because raising my kids is all about loving them well.
So how do we release ourselves from the constraints of a never-ending to-do list?
Enter my secret weapon– the Tah Done List, a fiesta of little triumphs where even the act of brushing your hair or successfully surviving the day earns you a confetti shower.
I mean, doesn’t Snow White practically break into song while gracefully sweeping the dust under the rug? Well, maybe not literally, but if she had a Tah Done List, I bet she'd celebrate those flawless rug-sweeping moments with glitter and a catchy tune! (If this isn’t so me, I don’t know what is.)
Here’s How to Use it:
Celebrate Everyday
Take a moment to acknowledge the beautiful tapestry you're weaving in your everyday life. Recognize the joy in moments of rest, the warmth found in shared stories, and the growth you witness in your child's increasing responsibilities – these are the treasures that truly matter.
Did your child open the door for someone? Perhaps they packed an extra snack for a friend in need, or took initiative by emptying the dishwasher without being asked. These seemingly small acts, like offering to take out the trash or responding to the dog's jingling bell during your dinner prep chaos, are worth checking off your list. Pin these moments to your fridge like you would an A+, and you'll likely find that your encouragement multiplies their occurrence.
Conquer Overwhelming Tasks
When faced with daunting tasks, employ a trick I've used for years: set a timer for 30 minutes, tackle what you can, jot it down, do a happy jig, and celebrate the wins. The key is to embrace the journey, whether it's folding a few pairs of pants or conquering towering tasks. By breaking it down and celebrating each step, you'll find motivation and joy in the process.
Rebellion Against Comparison
In a world saturated with the pressure for more, especially during this time of year, let's hit pause and acknowledge the monumental task of meeting everyday needs and celebrating unseen victories. It's high time we applaud every single one with a well-deserved round of applause. Your Tah Done list becomes a shared rebellion against the 'comparison monster,' allowing you to trade the weight of anxiety for the gentle embrace of gratitude.
The Result
Let's normalize the practice of throwing on party hats for our small victories – and cheer each other on! Whether it's gracefully navigating the challenges of the day, savoring self-care moments, or conquering tasks that once felt overwhelming. Trade the weight of anxiety for the gentle embrace of gratitude by creating a "Tah Done" list, celebrating every small step. I'm eagerly awaiting the chance to throw confetti your way for those little wins. SHOUT IT OUT!
Ready to Embrace the "Tah Done" List as a celebration of small victories leading to the big ones?
Share Your Triumphs
Loved reading about my chaotic kitchen and the "Tah Done" list? I'd love to hear about your victories, big or small! What's your recent "Tah Done" moment? Share it in the comments below. Because, my friend, we're all in this together: Cheers to celebrating life's little wins! 🎉
Love, Jayna

Let's create a wave of celebration, supporting each other through life's triumphs, finding joy in the journey, and appreciating the strength it takes to navigate life's twists and turns.
Surviving & Thriving on an imaginary budget
Dear Friends,
This might be a lengthy read, so consider grabbing a cup of warmth, finding a cozy seat, and settling in...
Recently, I received a text message—a response to my spoken prayer. A friend suggested this blog post topic, an exploration of survival and thriving on an imaginary budget. It felt like a God nudge, a call to share not only practical tips but also the authenticity of navigating life's challenges with faith and resilience.
In the midst of life's challenges, I intentionally wrap myself in a garment of praise and invite you into my "Living Library of GOD stories," where the extraordinary unfolds amid the ordinary—a testament to the ever-present grace weaving through our lives.
Let’s start with this: You Are Not Alone
In a world where problems often hide behind anonymous posts, shrouded in potential judgment and shame, I want you to know that your situation, though not ideal, is not abnormal. It is temporary. It will not last forever, and you possess the strength to overcome this chapter. I speak with conviction because I've been there, weeping, pleading for a chapter to end, longing to break free.
I promise you—God is in the details, orchestrating support even in the seemingly mundane.
My Personal Testimony: A Journey Through the Storm
In some of my life's most challenging moments, a mountain of difficulties came crashing down. We had just separated with a 5-day eviction notice looming over us, and my car decided to call it quits. It felt like an overwhelming cascade of problems. To add to the complexity, I was pregnant and jobless, with only modest earnings from babysitting. In response to this dire situation, I took decisive action.
I sold everything I could—our bedroom set, our nice living room furniture, our office furniture, toys the kids didn't use, and even clothes they had outgrown-which I sold to Once Upon a Child. If it wasn't an absolute necessity, it found a new home through Facebook Marketplace.
These sales provided just enough funds: the first month's rent, a negotiated deposit, the necessary car repairs, and three interview outfits contributed by my mom. At the same time, I approached social services with humility, armed with written statements from those I babysat for, detailing my income. While awaiting food assistance approval, they provided a food box—an experience that left me humbled yet grateful.
I found solace in the essentials—a room for my kid (I kept her things), a mattress for me- even if it was on the floor, a roof above our heads, and a functional car. Job hunting became a priority. In one memorable interview, I braved it in heels—yes, pregnant and in heels—nearly tripping down the stairs. I didn’t get that job either. Despite the setback, the next job interview, in flats this time, answered my prayer, and they hired me. The new job, offering minimum wage with early hours, presented its own challenges. One morning even demanded a 5 am start, a logistical nightmare for finding available daycare. Thankfully, a few friends graciously allowed me to drop my daughter off at their place before school. Waking her at 4 am was heartbreaking, but it was a sacrifice I made to keep things going.
Outside my job, I continued babysitting during evenings and weekends, finding a way to earn while still being present for my daughter. It was a delicate balancing act, but somehow, I made ends meet, and when I didn’t, God did. I recall days when my sweet neighbor, Ms. Betty, handed me an envelope, saying, "God told me you needed this." It was the exact amount I was short for rent due the next day. Another time, my mom's friend came to her, saying, "I got a bonus and wanted to donate it to your daughter. Can I have her address?" Once I got a speeding ticket on the way to a baby appointment at UVA; I was high risk after just having a miscarriage a few months before. My mom had earned a gift card with the sign-up for one of her utilities in just the amount of the ticket. These were moments when I had no idea where the money would come from, but I had faith that it would, continuously providing us with a roof over our heads, lights, food, and basic needs. When Evan was born with an airway defect, I couldn’t return to work. He needed monitoring 24/7. I had been in a car accident some years prior that finally settled, and the payout was just enough to cover us for a few months, alongside a tax return. Things were tight, but we made it.
Later, as funds were running out, I made the decision to resume providing in-home daycare. Prayers were answered with families I came to love. They became an integral part of my family, and I of theirs, as I cared for their little ones. They brought me flowers on Valentine's Day, joined us in holiday celebrations, and amidst the struggle, there was an abundance of joy. During the holidays, someone put my kids on a Christmas list, and they showed up at the door with boxes containing jackets, boots, and more. A friend went to Goodwill and dropped off the most adorable outfits for my daughter—she had boys and told me she loved shopping for my girl. Another friend showed up with a gift card and beef from her family’s farm. Another time, a friend invited me over for coffee and a catch-up, and she had a few bags of groceries gathered for me to take home. I never asked these people for anything; I talked with God, in my War Room, a seemingly empty closet, and the prayers one by one were answered-and this isn’t even half of it.
Looking back on this time and others, yes, I wanted to break free. But now, it’s kind of like a Cinderella fairy tale with magic pixie dust sent from our creator—a true princess rocking the crown. I recently told my husband, that given all that I know now about the hard, I’d still walk through it to be where we are today. Every trial, every tear, and every prayer was a step toward the ball where the grandeur of life unfolded. With each challenge, I wasn't losing a slipper; I was finding strength, resilience, and a deeper relationship with my Father. I emerged from the storm not just surviving but adorned with the beauty of newfound wisdom and an unshakeable belief in brighter days ahead. This transformation was especially meaningful for me as I didn't have a great relationship with my birth father, who went to prison when I was 18. Discovering a profound connection with my Heavenly Father became a source of solace and empowerment, reshaping my perspective on challenges.
Here are some Tips for the Trenches—Steps Toward a Way Out
Utilities and Payment Plans:
Communication is key when facing financial challenges. Reach out to utility providers early, explaining your situation and discussing payment plans. Prioritize settling past-due amounts to maintain essential services. Collaborate with providers to manage current bills, and explore budget plans for stability. For instance, I still have my electric bill on a monthly payment plan for effective budgeting.
Lowering Bills:
Conduct a thorough audit of your monthly expenses to identify areas for cost-cutting. Consider removing services like cable and internet. Seek alternatives such as utilizing the library, friends' homes, or cafes for internet access. Trim unnecessary subscriptions and opt for occasional low-cost entertainment like $1 Redbox movies or borrowed DVDs/VHS tapes. Yes, I really watched VHS!
Transportation:
Reduce gas costs by carpooling, or having kids take the bus. Leverage available support, like family members assisting with transportation to appointments, saving both on gas and providing emotional support. My mother-in-law was an angel who carried my son and me to most of our medical appointments when my car was on its last leg.
Financial Assistance:
Explore temporary financial assistance programs during challenging times. Apply for WIC, Food Stamps, Daycare Assistance, Transportation Assistance, and more. For additional resources in Central Virginia, you can check this website.
Grocery Shopping on a Budget:
Make informed decisions about grocery shopping by planning meals, creating lists, and sticking to them. Collaborate with friends to buy groceries in bulk, sharing costs and resources. Take advantage of sales, discounts, and coupons. Plan meal preparation nights with friends to create cost-effective freezer meals. I did this with my friends Rachel and Katie. We danced, laughed, and cooked. It brought joy amid our struggles.
Some of my favorite budget-friendly meals are spaghetti, tacos, homemade chicken noodle soup, or even simple pb and j with carrots and an apple. They are still some of my favs today. Sam’s Club also has the best rotisserie chicken!
Medical Expenses:
Manage medical expenses by inquiring about generic prescriptions and exploring free or low-cost clinics. Investigate financial-based care options or apply for Medicaid.
Networking for Opportunities:
Do you have a talent or a creative skill? Whether it's offering singing telegram services, providing childcare, walking dogs, crafting hand-knit scarves, or exploring other unique abilities, these can serve as potential side gigs. Personally, I discovered the world of network marketing, and it became a significant advantage in overcoming my challenging situation. I'm not here to recruit you, but I believe that individuals driven for change are the most resourceful in making necessary sacrifices when they're determined to break free from being stuck. In my case, this mindset shift got me off food assistance, replaced my income, and provided the precious gift of spending more time as a mom—a much-needed break after years of hard work. It also allowed me to trade in my Maxima for a Cadillac.
Savings and Emergency Fund:
Initiate a small savings fund by parting with unused items. Remember my selling of all the unnecessary things? Do it. You can replace them later. The roof over your head, the light and heat, the food in your home, and the gas in your car—those are priorities. Gradually work toward building an emergency fund for unexpected expenses.
Financial Counseling:
Seek advice from financial counselors and consider options like debt consolidation loans to streamline payments and reduce stress.
Community Resources:
Stay informed about available community resources, such as food, clothing, and diaper pantries. Churches in the area may also prepare meals weekly. For additional resources in Central Virginia, you can check this website.
Education and Training:
Tap into free educational resources and explore potential scholarships for personal and professional development. This is something I didn't do during my tough time, but I have friends who did, and they're now thriving!
Maintaining Connection with Your Children:
Despite working multiple jobs, find creative ways to connect with your kids. Utilize car time for meaningful conversations, leave notes in their lunchboxes, and add personal touches, like cutting the crust off their sandwiches. Consider maintaining a journal where you can write back and forth, especially if you're working early or late hours. Remind them that the current situation is temporary.
Additionally, tap into available resources for support beyond the family. Counseling services can offer a safe space for both you and your children to navigate challenges and emotions. Explore opportunities like the Big Brother Big Sister program, where they can find mentorship and guidance from positive role models. If you're part of a church community, inquire about youth groups that provide a supportive environment for your kids. Building connections outside the immediate family can contribute to a network of care and understanding.
Support Groups:
Navigating through challenging times can be immensely eased with the support of others who've walked similar paths.
DivorceCare offers a community where you can find healing and support after separation or divorce.
Celebrate Recovery provides a safe space to find community and freedom from the issues that may be controlling your life. My dear friend Debbie O'Brien is the VA State Rep, and she can help you find a group in your area. (She’s been there in the trenches too and prayed over this blog post with me last night.)
Helping Others in Tight Times:
In moments of heaviness and the desire to give back, consider babysitting for a friend or sharing an extra meal with a widowed or elderly neighbor down the street. You might not be able to feed an entire family, but that extra slice of meatloaf and scoop of potatoes can go a long way, feeding their heart and stomach. Offer clothes and toys to others—remember, we're not defined by our circumstances; we're cherished and supported. Brighter days are ahead, and you can still help others while receiving the support you need.
I leave you with this:
Facing financial challenges is a journey, not a destination. Navigating the trenches, whatever they may be for you, is undeniably tough. But amidst it all, remember that true contentment isn't found in a dream home or financial abundance. Joy is waiting for you right where you are—in the small victories: the car that's still running, the friend offering a helping hand, and the unexpected gifts from a caring community. Embrace the richness in these moments; they transcend the difficulties. And never forget, reaching out for support is not a sign of weakness; it's a testament to your strength and resilience.
A piece of advice: In moments when your heart might be tempted to harden, allow it to stay soft and open. Remember my first blog post? I shared how I filled my husband's empty closet with prayer during our separation. All that emptiness—let Him fill it! He's waiting for you to let Him in! You can do this! I believe in you! Don't let today's bump in the road handicap you.
Much love, Jayna

In a world where prices are doing acrobatics and every penny counts, let's steer away from the gift-giving stress. The real gems are in those gestures that don't come with a hefty price tag. Let's face it — the sentiment holds more value than the price tag, no matter the gift.
Let's dive into the magic of thoughtful and budget-friendly gestures that not only make a mark but also create moments that linger long after the wrapping paper is gone.
14 Thoughtful and Creative Ways to Share Love

Every year, they pick out a memorable snapshot or create a collage of their adventures together. It's their way of freezing the laughter, the adventures, and all the fun they've had in time. The framed photo becomes a window to a treasure trove of shared experiences, a gift that truly keeps on giving.

Thoughtful and Thrifty holiday suggestions
Dear Friends,
I see you. You're juggling a thousand things, wearing multiple hats, and striving to make the holiday season magical for your little ones. It's okay if your plans aren't Pinterest-perfect; the real magic often happens in the imperfect moments. Embrace where you are, using what you have, as these moments teach invaluable lessons to your kids for the challenges they might face in the future. I know, I've been there, in the dry season.
Show them love through thoughtful gestures, shared laughter, and time together, emphasizing that caring goes beyond material things. We all have budgets, big or small, because money only spends once. Teach the value of gratitude and the joy in giving and receiving with an open heart.
Now, let's dive into budget-friendly and free ideas (that I’ve used for my own babies) to make this season special:
1. Something to Wear: Thrifty Fashion Finds
Embrace the adventure of thrifting; create stylish outfits for less than $20. It's not just about clothing; it's about the stories these pieces carry. (This is actually my daughter’s favorite type of mom date!)
2. Something They Want: Movie Night in a Bag
Create a cozy movie night without breaking the bank. PJs, a couple of classic DVDs, popcorn, and candy from the dollar store - simple ingredients for a memorable evening. My sister-in-law gifted me this one year, a bucket of snacks and coupons for the RedBox. It was a gift that kept giving!
3. Something to Read:
Dive into the world of affordable books from thrift stores. You can purchase 10 books for $1 from Goodwill. I do this all the time to add to our homeschool library. Build a personalized collection and ignite the love for reading in your little ones. You could even wrap up one book for each night leading to Christmas Day as an “advent calendar” for less than $3.
4. Something They Need: Practical and Appreciated
Reflect on the simple essentials that brought joy in your childhood. Oranges, apples, underwear, and socks - sometimes the most practical gifts are the most appreciated. This is what my grandparents gave me every year in my stocking…and nuts! Haha Have you ever seen the video of the kid opening up a banana? It’s precious!
5. Group Gathering: Toy and Clothing Swap
Tight budget? Organize a swap with friends. It's a beautiful way for each child to receive something "new" and learn the value of sharing. Seriously, someone should organize this on a big scale. A FREE swap!
6. Creative Experience: Paint Night
Grab canvases and paint inexpensively from the dollar store. Host a paint night at home, creating art and memories together.
7. Homemade Treats:
Bake together, packaging homemade treats in festive containers. Spread joy by sharing these with friends and neighbors for a double gift that teaches the value of receiving and gifting.
8. Nature Scavenger Hunt:
Explore nature together. Create a scavenger hunt for treasures like pinecones and interesting rocks, fostering a love for the outdoors. Outside is FREE!
Let's remember that joy doesn't come with a price tag. It's in the shared laughter, the warmth of homemade cookies, and the simple act of being together. You're doing an incredible job, and your efforts, no matter how small you think they are, are making a BIG difference. It’s the small ripples that create BIG waves. Embrace the imperfections, find joy in the simplicity, and let this holiday season be a celebration of love, connection, and the beautiful messiness of family. You've got this, and you're not alone in this journey. Cheers to a joy-filled and budget-friendly holiday season!
Much Love, Jayna
My Favorite Part of the Holiday Hullabaloo
Truth be told, I'm a Thanksgiving girl, all the way. Perhaps the holiday holds a special place in my heart because I made my grand entrance on that very day, exactly 40 years ago! (It makes me grin to know that I delayed everyone's turkey dinners; you could say I've been inspiring lateness from birth!)
More likely, it's the gathering of family, the warmth of quality time (my love language), the delicious food, the tales told, and the echoes of laughter. So, while Christmas may not be my absolute favorite, I undoubtedly find true charm in the selection of the Christmas tree.
A Little Back Story:
My mom gifted me a sweet little artificial tree when I was a single mom. Tiny baby Hailey and I treasured that tree. It marked the beginning of our Christmas traditions, inspiring me to gift Zack his inaugural artificial tree the first Christmas we celebrated together, while we were dating. We cherished these trees throughout the years, adding different ornaments, including one that held my engagement ring 12 years ago. (Insert the awwwww!) After we got married, life took a rocky turn, and we found ourselves separated. Marriage can be tough, y’all, but it’s worth sticking it out! When we decided to reconcile, we embraced new traditions—one of them being the annual ritual of cutting down a fresh Christmas tree. This marks our 6th year with a real tree!
SO today is the Day!
My husband will dress in his classic red and black flannel (that buffalo plaid, if you will), looking like the Brawny man, wielding a hand saw. The whole family, including our pup, will bundle up and jump in the car. (This year we will take two because my mom is here to celebrate.) As we hit the road, Christmas tunes fill the air. We take turns with the aux, but some classics always make it to our playlist—Feliz Navidad is a favorite, and I love Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Baby, It's Cold Outside (despite its controversy), and the timeless Do They Know It's Christmas in Africa?
Upon arrival at the tree farm, choosing "The One" transforms into its own adventure. Despite our grand plans to explore, we often find ourselves irresistibly drawn back to the very first tree we encountered—a concolor fir with a delightful fragrance of evergreen mixed with oranges. Whether we're placing boughs in our cars to infuse the scent throughout the season or boiling them on the stove with cranberries for an instant "home for the holidays" ambiance, the experience is nothing short of magical. After some fun photo ops, a bit of netting magic, and some clever strapping to the car by my husband, our chosen tree is all set for the journey home.
Back at Home, the Real Festive Fun Begins:
Evan and Zack mix a concoction of ginger ale in the tree's base, marking the start of the decorating process. Lights expertly placed by my hubby, ornaments carefully chosen by the kids, and the combined effort of the family transform the tree into a bona fide festive masterpiece.
But the True Highlight?
Placing our beloved angel atop the tree. It's become quite an amusing task over the years, especially as Evan grows. The struggle is real, my friends, but my husband will make it happen! Our angel is special, a family heirloom from my mom, bought when I was just a baby. One for me, one for my sister—she carefully alternated them each year so they each hold the same amount of Christmas magic. My heart smiles every year that my kids are experiencing the same angel that I did as a child.
More Than Trees / Suggestions for Creative Holiday Culture in Your Own Home:
Our holiday traditions go beyond tree-cutting. I always buy Hailey a new nutcracker. This year Evan chose one too. Hailey and I sneak in and decorate Nate's room. The Christmas baking begins (my kids are better at it than I am), and we have a Gingerbread House decoration contest with a friendly vote on Facebook for the best creation (Hailey usually wins). Let's not forget The Bedford Christmas Parade, although this will be the first year our BIGS aren’t marching in it. We mix late Friendsgivings, Dirty Santas, and Christmas light car rides with hot chocolate. Our mischievous Elf on the Shelf adds fun, and the advent calendar builds anticipation. We create a Christmas Countdown of books that concludes with a cozy reading of the Christmas story of our Savior's birth, followed by the joyous chaos of unwrapping presents in the morning.
What is your favorite holiday memory or tradition that you’ve crafted over the years? Or are you starting something new this year? I'd love to hear about it in the comments below! 🌟🎄✨
The Culture of the Dinner Table
Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around the legendary Sunday dinners at my Nana and Papa's house. The moment you walked through the door, the scent of delicious food enveloped you, instantly making your mouth water. Sometimes it was simple, and sometimes the flavors were out of this world.
But it wasn't just about the food; it was about shared stories, laughter filling the room, and love radiating from every corner. Those Sunday dinners were a sacred time for my family, a moment when we all came together to truly connect.
When I started my own family, I was determined to recreate that culture. We made it a tradition to gather around our dinner table. (Y’all, my husband even built it with his own hands.) Regardless of whether it was a culinary masterpiece or just takeout, our nightly gatherings became something we all looked forward to throughout the week. Zack or I would holler out “Eaty, Eaty” (no joke, that's what we say), summoning the kids to help set the table, and we would all eagerly share our day.
They’d join us even if they weren’t very hungry because it's not just about the food; it's about the connections formed, the stories shared, and the bonds strengthened. As we pass around the taco toppings or the spaghetti (depending on the night), we take turns recounting our highs and lows. It's like a mini therapy session, mixed with a bit of comedy, but with a side of garlic bread.
Even now, at least 4 out of 7 nights, our table becomes a hub of laughter, stories, and delicious food. While Hailey is away at college, we keep the tradition alive. She joins us via Facetime when she can. (My mom does too!) When Nate brings home a friend, or Hailey brings her college crew home, our table expands to accommodate everyone. We make sure there's enough food to feed an army (or a group of hungry college students), and we welcome them with open arms. It's a beautiful sight to see new faces mingling with familiar ones, creating a sense of belonging and friendship.
The conversations that unfold are pure gold as our dinner table transforms into a stand-up comedy club. No topic is off limits, and my husband, Nate, and Evan, in their hilarious ways, never fail to bring a smile to our faces.
But it's not all giggles and guffaws. We also dive into deeper discussions, exploring topics that matter to us. From politics to pop culture, religion, the Bible, books, or movies, we love engaging in thoughtful debates (keeping it civil, with no flying spaghetti noodles). It's a chance for our family to grow intellectually and appreciate different perspectives.
So, my friend, I encourage you to embrace the joy of routine family meals, or even just one day a week if you can make it happen. Remember that Sunday dinner was what started our family culture. Whether it's a quiet evening with just your immediate family or a bustling gathering with college kids in tow, make that time count. Let the stories flow, the laughter burst forth, and the love radiate from every corner. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Celebrating 11 Years: A Journey of Love, Repair, and Exciting New Chapters
Tomorrow marks our 11th anniversary, a milestone that resonates with love, repair, and the anticipation of exciting new chapters.
Recently, a new friend inquired about the reconciliation of my marriage, and my response was simple: Ultimately, God played a pivotal role, but it was also about working on myself, impatiently waiting and praying, never losing hope, and believing in the miracle to come.
Working on Myself:
Self-reflection, healing, and creating change became my daily companions during the separation. Alone, I decided to fill my husband's empty closet with prayer. Though Zack thinks hiding out in a closet is a bit peculiar, that uninterrupted, intentional time with Jesus taught me invaluable lessons.
In that prayer closet, I poured out my heart, wrote down my prayers, and noted how they were answered, providing me with hope. A journal became a nightly brain dump, offering a space for racing thoughts to go and making room for peace, joy, and contentment in the hard times. It also helped me process feelings in a healthy way and provided material for discussions with my counselor.
Remembering the advice, "You will want to be writing down (to remember) the things that God will start revealing to you," I documented my journey, finding encouragement and praise for answered prayers in God's timing.
Finding Support:
There's a time to do the work and a time to rest. Friends wrote verses on index cards, offering encouragement and strength. Another friend helped me discern the voice of God, spoke truth into my life, and encouraged patience. I cried—sometimes at the foot of the cross in my mind—and felt the load lifting as I drifted off to sleep.
Body movement became a form of release. I turned on music and danced, sometimes to Jesus, sometimes to the jams I grew up with (because that's when hip hop was good), finding release and happiness in a simple dance party. Walks with my kids also became moments of healing.
The Whole Big To Do, Ta Done!
Crafting a "To Do, Ta Done list" became a source of joy and gratitude in my life. This list wasn't just about ticking off major tasks; it celebrated the significance of seemingly small achievements, like brushing my hair or donning matching socks. By highlighting these everyday accomplishments as non-negotiables, the list encouraged me to break down larger tasks into more manageable steps. In doing so, I discovered the beauty of celebrating the little moments, realizing they were the building blocks of conquering the BIG!
Community:
Friends who showed up on birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays, along with church support from Celebrate Recovery and Life’s Healing Choices, helped me navigate grief.
Rebuilding:
Unpacking bags of bitterness, hatred, and anger created space for forgiveness, friendship, and the rediscovery of love. As my husband started showing up, taking time to rebuild trust and our friendship, I had space to let him in. He brought dinner, helped with meals, we went on walks, and he even fixed my car to prevent repair bills. Together, we BOTH did the work and rediscovered love in a deeper way than ever before.
Looking to the Future:
Navigating this new season as our BIGS venture into college brings a refreshing perspective to our marriage. While we're not yet empty nesters with Evan still at home, we've found new ways to spend our time together. On evenings when I've missed Hailey, Zack and I have played simple Battleship matches. (Those who know us well will giggle remembering our hilarious Scrabble matches. This is so US!) The weekends once consumed by band competitions have transformed into excursions to Natural Bridge, cavern explorations, and leisurely Sunday breakfasts. Turns out, those prayers I whispered in that closet, were answered.
In a candid moment with Zack, I couldn’t help but chuckle as I confessed, “It's strange to be so happy. I'm not sure I know how to do happy.” He is my absolute best friend, bringing laughter into every single day. So here I am, raising a cheer to the complicated moments that led to strengthened bonds—an unspoken pact to face life's hurdles together.
And to Zack Fielder, I love you All the Way, the Whole BIG Thing—an immeasurable amount. I pledge to continue loving you most on the days when, perhaps, I may like you the least (although lately, I like you the MOST—keep it up! Haha). What we have is undeniably good and worth every moment! As we celebrate 11 years, here's to countless pages ahead filled with laughter and love! Cheers to all the years of our lives! Cheese and all!
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12
The Whole Big Journey Begins
This blog has been simmering for a decade—a wild ride of self-discovery, bouncing back from tough times, and uncovering joy right in the middle of life's chaos. It's my way of throwing a big party for the human experience and shouting out the wonders of positivity, gratitude, and rolling with your own timeline. A place where LOVE and LAUGHTER live!
Oh my heart. Here it is, "The Whole Big Thing," right on your screen! I can hardly believe it.
The spark for this blog ignited during some major life moments—a pregnancy that followed a miscarriage, the rollercoaster of marriage, parenting chaos (with a side of navigating diagnoses), and being there for my daughter as she powered through bullying battles. In the thick of all that, the idea of creating a space to help others find real contentment wouldn't let go. Even when doubts and excuses popped up, the dream of weaving a culture of gratitude and positivity into daily life stuck around.
The journey had its share of hiccups—wrestling with doubts, battling self-doubt, and the never-ending quest for the perfect name. There were abandoned domains, Facebook pages created and quickly deleted—it felt like the timing was never quite right. Yet, amid the chaos, I heard those subtle whispers—a call to share stories, create content for others, and make a positive dent in the universe.
As life settled down a bit, with both BIGs heading off to college, things got clearer. Colorful visions popped up, and heart-to-hearts with friends and family sealed the deal. Real folks, from strangers to long-lost friends, echoed the same sentiment—it was time to spill the beans. It was in these moments that the puzzle pieces started falling into place.
Prayers went up, thoughts flowed onto the computer screen, and a plan started brewing. The journey expanded beyond words, spilling over into a YouTube channel inspired by Evan's five years of persistent requests—a gentle nudge that good things come to those who wait. What began as a single idea evolved into a detailed plan: 34 weeks of inspiring, encouraging, and downright fun content, paired with a year's worth of video plans. We've got some exciting stuff lined up, and we're crossing our fingers that you'll love it!
And then, just like that, in a simple goodnight kiss to my husband, the name appeared—a bold whisper deep in my soul saying, "It's time." And everything clicked into place.
So, imagine this blog as your friendly companion—it's a spot where we navigate life's bumps, chuckle at its quirks, and uncover joy even when things get a little dim. Welcome to The Whole Big Journey—let's make some memories together! 🌟 🚀
