Embracing Chaos: The 'Tah Done' lifestyle
The week before Thanksgiving, my husband stumbled upon our kitchen to find our steam mop abandoned on the floor – like a whimsical domestic crime scene. The ensuing conversation was hilariously typical. I was admittedly a bit more "just forget it" mid-task than usual, cord sprawled across the room and all. These little chaotic moments, where planned perfection surrenders to chaos, like clean laundry cascading into the hallway because Evan wanted me to count his pogo stick jumps, are what make our lives uniquely ours.
I think the majority of us can agree that adulting often feels like navigating a to-do list longer than a CVS receipt. Drowning in it, I embraced the beauty of imperfect progress. Life doesn't demand flawless execution but thrives on genuine effort. Putting off a task and taking our marching orders from God feels more true, noble, right, pure, and lovely than following our own exhaustive to-do list. Just think about it – what brings more joy and peace than aligning our actions with God's purpose? The reality-mid mop swipe, my kid asked to snuggle and read a book, the mopping could wait because raising my kids is all about loving them well.
So how do we release ourselves from the constraints of a never-ending to-do list?
Enter my secret weapon– the Tah Done List, a fiesta of little triumphs where even the act of brushing your hair or successfully surviving the day earns you a confetti shower.
I mean, doesn’t Snow White practically break into song while gracefully sweeping the dust under the rug? Well, maybe not literally, but if she had a Tah Done List, I bet she'd celebrate those flawless rug-sweeping moments with glitter and a catchy tune! (If this isn’t so me, I don’t know what is.)
Here’s How to Use it:
Celebrate Everyday
Take a moment to acknowledge the beautiful tapestry you're weaving in your everyday life. Recognize the joy in moments of rest, the warmth found in shared stories, and the growth you witness in your child's increasing responsibilities – these are the treasures that truly matter.
Did your child open the door for someone? Perhaps they packed an extra snack for a friend in need, or took initiative by emptying the dishwasher without being asked. These seemingly small acts, like offering to take out the trash or responding to the dog's jingling bell during your dinner prep chaos, are worth checking off your list. Pin these moments to your fridge like you would an A+, and you'll likely find that your encouragement multiplies their occurrence.
Conquer Overwhelming Tasks
When faced with daunting tasks, employ a trick I've used for years: set a timer for 30 minutes, tackle what you can, jot it down, do a happy jig, and celebrate the wins. The key is to embrace the journey, whether it's folding a few pairs of pants or conquering towering tasks. By breaking it down and celebrating each step, you'll find motivation and joy in the process.
Rebellion Against Comparison
In a world saturated with the pressure for more, especially during this time of year, let's hit pause and acknowledge the monumental task of meeting everyday needs and celebrating unseen victories. It's high time we applaud every single one with a well-deserved round of applause. Your Tah Done list becomes a shared rebellion against the 'comparison monster,' allowing you to trade the weight of anxiety for the gentle embrace of gratitude.
The Result
Let's normalize the practice of throwing on party hats for our small victories – and cheer each other on! Whether it's gracefully navigating the challenges of the day, savoring self-care moments, or conquering tasks that once felt overwhelming. Trade the weight of anxiety for the gentle embrace of gratitude by creating a "Tah Done" list, celebrating every small step. I'm eagerly awaiting the chance to throw confetti your way for those little wins. SHOUT IT OUT!
